Without question, the 2020 Jeep Wrangler is the most capable, most comfortable and most diverse iteration ever to wear the iconic Wrangler label. As an off-road, rock-crawling champ, the Wrangler knows no equal. But, unlike Wranglers and CJs of the past, the 2020 Wrangler is equally competent on the paved road, offering an SUV-like ride, better feedback from the steering and brakes and more luxury and tech features inside the cabin.Engine choices range from the proven 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 to a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, with a diesel to be added later in the year.And, while it does face some competition from the new Ford Bronco and aging Toyota 4Runner, neither competitor provides the kind of open-air experience or Jeep-specific options unique to the Wrangler. Our experience driving the Jeep Wrangler was in the wilds of New Zealand, where rocks and boulders, rushing water, and rutted and muddy fields put the new Wrangler to the test. At least in theory - the reality is that none of the varied terrain proved much of a challenge to the Jeep.
The Tru-Lok front and rear locking differentials helped make short work of the slick stuff, and both the V6 and turbocharged 4-cylinder provided plenty of torque and power whenever we asked for it.Speaking of torque, Jeep offers a novel mild-hybrid system called eTorque, but only on the Sahara 4-door trim. Standard on the 4-cylinder turbo and available as an option on the V6, this feature employs an electric motor/generator that replaces the traditional alternator and can store energy for use at a later time, most notably when accelerating or passing at low speeds. Wrangler engines not fitted with eTorque come with electronic start/stop (ESS).Out on the trails, if more wheel travel is required, the anti-roll bars can be electronically disconnected. Rubicon models also come with tubular rock rails in addition to the standard four skidplates for extra undercarriage protection.
Yet that's all expected from a Jeep - what really surprised us was the new Wrangler's civility around town. The improved steering, 5-link suspension, improved body mounts, retuned shocks, and even the drivetrain have all been upgraded for an around-town experience that belies this SUV's off-road ability. TURBOCHARGED 4-CYLINDER ENGINEWith better fuel economy and more torque than the V6, the Wrangler’s 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder strikes a nice balance between the diesel and gas V6. It also can be equipped with Jeep’s mild-hybrid eTorque technology on Sahara 4-door trims, but only when mated to the 8-speed automatic.UPGRADED INTERIORFrom its comfortable and supportive seats to its nicely padded door and center armrests, the 2020 Jeep Wrangler pampers its occupants. Don’t think the Wrangler has gone soft, however, as the Jeep still offers removable carpet, allowing the interior to be hosed down, removable doors and top and even a folding windshield. Modern tech such as Apple CarPlay, forward-collision warning and avoidance and even adaptive cruise control can all be added.Vehicle Details. The 2020 Jeep Wrangler interior combines elements of modern, sophisticated design with a simple and clean layout that has been part of the Wrangler’s DNA for decades.
Nestled in the body-colored dash panels are such 21st-century touches as a large touch-screen infotainment system and available Alpine audio system.Of course, the prerequisite grab handles are still here, as is the removable top and protective incorporated rollbars. Base models are a bit less fancy, but move up to the big-dollar trims and you’ll get heated seats and steering wheel, navigation and even a leather-wrapped dash. The Wrangler 4-door offers more rear-seat legroom courtesy of a longer wheelbase. Even though it is longer and wider than any Wrangler before it, the 2020 Jeep Wrangler is still easily recognizable.
It’s a design that has evolved rather than radically changed. While the larger layout helps improve ride and stability, it still features Jeep mainstays like removable doors, a folding windshield and soft- or hardtop roof options.Lightweight aluminum is used on the doors, making it easier for one person to remove and replace them, and the soft-top can be taken down in just a few seconds thanks to a simplified 2-step folding system. The number of bolts used to hold the windshield in place has dropped from 28 to just four, and there’s a choice of two hardtops: one with twin removable panels, the other with a power-operated retracting cover.
The base-model Wrangler Sport comes standard with the V6 and 6-speed manual transmission. It also comes standard with 4-wheel drive, in this case Jeep's Command-Trac system. You also get standard fog lights, underbody skidplates, push-button ignition, and Jeep's new Sunrider with its clever sunroof panel.What's more noteworthy is what's missing. Power windows, air conditioning, a touch-screen audio system and Bluetooth are only available as options or on higher trim levels. The Sport does come with an 8-speaker audio system though, with USB and AUX inputs. Wrangler 4-door models come with an extra set of doors, 5-passenger seating capacity, and additional rear-seat and luggage space. Factory options include your choice of an 8-speed automatic or 4-cylinder turbo engine in any model.
The 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 is only available on the 4-door trims. The trim ladder goes up through Sport S, Sahara (4-door only) and Rubicon models, each with varying levels of equipment. The Sport S adds power windows, air conditioning and keyless entry; the 4-door's Sahara model adds upgraded trim and allows buyers to select the more advanced Selec-Trac full-time transfer case.Rubicon models are the most off-road ready, with tubular rock rails and an even more advanced 4-wheel-drive system. Option packages include different hardtop configurations, an 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system, the Advanced Safety Group and blind-spot sensors.
For now, the 2020 Jeep Wrangler is powered by a choice of two gasoline engines, although a 3.0-liter diesel is set for introduction later in the model year. The standard engine across the lineup is a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Buyers will have the option of a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic.On the Sarah 4-door, opting for the automatic brings Jeep’s mild-hybrid eTorque electric assist. Optional is a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine pumping out 268 horses and 295 lb-ft of torque, the latter delivered very low in the rev band.
The 4-cylinder is offered on all trims, but only with the 8-speed automatic. The Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for a 2020 Jeep Wrangler Sport 2-door starts at about $29,790, including the $1,495 destination charge. At the other end of the price spectrum, the Wrangler Rubicon 4-door starts at about $43,000. Naturally, options inflate that price, and if you want all the goodies on your Wrangler Rubicon 4-door, you'll easily pass the $55,000 mark, which is luxury-crossover-SUV territory.

That's not cheap, of course, but at least you can get into a fully capable rock-hopping Wrangler for considerably less.The Jeep Wrangler is a unique proposition in the market, with few direct competitors.
